"Child in the City" conference 2008

Youth Change Makers is a new grant round offered by The Foundation for Young Australians. This grant is available to both individuals and small groups of young people (aged between 12 and 25 years) who have identified an issue in their community, developed an advocacy response and wish to act on this issue.

New South Wales Youth Week Website Design Competition 2009

If you are aged between 12 and 25 years and live in New South Wales in Australia, you can enter the New South Wales Youth Week Website Design Competition for 2009 and design the face of the Youth Week in NSW website. Designs may be from an individual or a group.

The winner of the competition will have their design appear as the face of the website and win $500.

Professional Certificate in the design and management of the public realm

This Professional Certificate deals with the policies, techniques and skills that will enable you to successfully create an outstanding public realm. It is a six-day residential course, provided in two three-day sessions. The course integrates the urban design perspective with the engineering perspective. It will explore the latest accepted urban design principles, including how different people use public space and working with the community, as well as the practical implementation of highway improvements, pedestrian crossings and traffic calming.

The lastest survey about neighbourhood planning covers the Chermside, Graceville/ Sherwood and Pinkenba/ Eagle Farm areas. If you live in one of these areas, this survey is for you!

The survey only takes ten minutes to complete and will allow your opinion on the important issues for your neighbourhood as it changes over the next ten years to be heard. The comments from the neighbourhood surveys will inform the scope of the draft Neighbourhood Plan.

The Office of Youth Affairs will be providing grants to support youth engagement activities held in National Youth Week 2009. The theme for National Youth Week in 2009 is 'to celebrate and recognise the value of all young Australians to their communities'. Activities should aim to reflect this theme and encourage the participation of young Territorians in this event.

On 18 July, 2008, the New South Wales Attorney-General John Hatzistergos announced the $1.4 million dollar trial of the Iemma Government's new Youth Conduct Orders program. This program, which will be piloted in New England, Campbelltown and Mount Druitt from December, will be trialled for two years before being evaluated by an independent evaluator.

UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum 4: Harmonious urbanisation

The World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations in order to examine rapid urbanisation and its impacts on communities, cities, economies and policies. The main theme of the fourth World Urban Forum is "Harmonious urbanisation". This theme is supported by six sub-themes including socially harmonious cities (including equity and inclusiveness), economically harmonious cities, environmentally harmonious cities, spatially harmonious cities (e.g. urban planning and mixed land-use), historically harmonious cities (e.g. heritage and urban renewal) and harmonious cities for all age groups (including young people).

A series of networking events and roundtables will accompany this forum.

Celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2008

On 10 December, 2007, the UN Secretary-General launched a year-long campaign in the lead up to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.The theme of the campaign is 'Dignity and justice for all of us'.

Another campaign has been launched to coincede with this event - the website http://everyhumanhasrights.org/ is encouraging people to embrace the values and goals of the UDHR by signing the declaration as an individual. Over 14,000 individuals have signed so far and the website aims to secure one billion signatures. Find out more about this campaign at http://everyhumanhasrights.org.

Youth Action and Policy Association NSW Youth Conference 2008

The YAPA NSW Youth Conference is open to all young people who live in NSW aged over 12 and under 18 years (N.B. IN THE NEWS: Australian Federal Government releases Green Paper on homelessness

On 22 May, 2008, the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd released the Federal Government's Green Paper on homelessness, titled Which way home? A new approach to homelessness. The objective of this Green Paper is to promote public discussion of homelessness, highlight the challenges that are faced by people experiencing homelessness and suggest possible ways forward.

The Green Paper is available from the FaHCSIA website as a summary or full report.

IN THE NEWS: 'Mosquito' device introduced in Canada

In recent months, Yspace reported that local councils in Queensland, Australia, were considering introducing an ultrasonic device - referred to as 'The Mosquito' - that emits a high-pitched noise that can only be heard by young people as a method of discouraging gatherings of young people in public space.

This device is already in use in Scotland and England, where it has been a subject of debate as to whether it infringes on young people's rights.

These devices have now been installed in Castlegar in the province of British Columbia in Canada to discourage young people from "loitering" and engaging in "drunken behaviour". You can read about their introduction by following the above link to a CBC news report.

Australia 2020 Summit - Final Report

On 31 May, 2008, the Australian Prime Minister announced the public release of the Final Report of the Australia 2002 Summit.

This report provides a record of the Summit and the recommendations made in relation to each of the discussion areas. The report includes an introductory section plus ten chapters, which can either be viewed or dowloaded individually, or the full report can be downloaded in its entirety.

YAPA New South Wales Youth Conference 2008: For New South Wales young people aged 12 to 17 years

This conference is for New South Wales young people aged 12 to 17 years who want to have their say and get the skills to be able to do this. Topics that you will discuss and learn about at the conference include surveys, fundraising, lobbying, youth councils, the government and more!

The cost is $90 per young people. If you live in a rural or remote area, you can apply for a travel subsidy.

Designing 'natural' play environments conference
